What if we don't train them and they stay? Student employees are an essential part of the ILL department, especially given shrinking budgets and increased user expectations such as document/book delivery. This workshop will discuss student employment beyond interviewing, hiring and training. We will talk about accountability with student employees and library staff through the use of a Working Agreement. This is an important conversation at the beginning of employment, so that ILL staff and student employees know and understand what expected of them in their respective roles. We will also discuss how learning and personality styles are important to define and discover for the completion of complex tasks within the ILL department, especially given the changing landscape of resource sharing. We will end the presentation with information on motivating, recognizing and rewarding student employees when tasks may become routine and stagnant.
